People who are afraid of heights should definitely avoid this place :-)
The real joy begins after the wodden planks. The trail is carved in the cliff, to be more accurate you need to put your foot into the hole which some lunatic has carved long time ago. There is just nothing behind these girls and under the entire trail is an abyss which is allegedly 1000m deep.(I didn't check :-) ) Safety harness keep your head cold long enough to "normally" pass the trail.
After hopping on the holes in the cliff you arrive to a "terace" where you can loosen up and walk without safety equipment. If you like you can take a stroll on the tree which grows above the abyss like this Chinese boy did. He loosened his safety harness so that he can proudly stand upwards. He yelled that he is a Superman and I replied that he should be careful not to fly.
Now you need to take the same way back...how else? It is all fine and dandy but the real problem occurs when you must pass the trail at the same time when someone from the other way is coming. From the safe terace over the holes in the cliff...
...and again over the wooden planks...
...and at the end climbing the..hm..steps. Here you can see what happens when people coming from different directions meet. One must hang on the side while the other passes. The problem occurs when someone starts to panic and can't move.
The crazy hike is behind me. I returned the safety harness, took my things and enjoyed the amazing view as I was going away.
While I didn't feel any pain up there on the trail, during my coming down on the "normal" steps to the cable car I felt severe pain in my legs, especially knees. I had to come down slowly.
Huashan is a beautiful place. I must say that going to the difficult trail bellow the South peak is not neccessary. It was my choice but there are more relatively safer hikes which lead to the South, East and West peak with equally magnificent views. Who ever comes to Xi'an, famous for it's teracotta soldiers and likes the nature and a bit of excitement shouldn't miss Huashan.
